Working From Home Tips

I’ve been working from home for years, learning what helps promote focus, productivity and getting things done. These are my tips and guidelines in no particular order

Maintain your routine! Go to sleep and wake up like you normally would. Eat meals on a consistent schedule. Standing up from your work spot every 45 minutes or so is also a great way to get a quick break in and stretch your body.

Don’t have a routine? Make one now before doing anything else.

Dedicate a section of your home to your work (and not your bedroom, if you can help it). Having a single place where you work and focus will allow your body and mind to understand that while you are in this spot, you are working.

It’s important that you do not use this spot for anything else. At the bare minimum, a single section on your couch will suffice.

Get dressed! Do not walk around in your pajamas all day. Dress like you normally would for your job or at minimum, as casually as allowed.

Getting dressed for work gets your mindset focused on being productive.

Background Noise

Background noises can help! YouTube has plenty of ambient sounds. Restaurants, bars, cities, weather, nature, etc… Don’t have the TV playing anything distracting (news, soap operas, cartoons)

For some of us, listening to music helps. You’ll need to find out what works best for you.

Productivity Expectations

For those of us with kids, we understand how difficult it can be to get your work done, help them with their school work, and ensure everyone is being productive.

Communicate with your boss on reasonable expectations so that you’re being transparent and can help set a standard.

Social Distractions

Put your phone on silent. Do not browse Facebook, Twitter or Instagram during your working hours. Cutting out social distractions is very important to ensuring you focus on getting your work done.

Treat your “working from home hours” as you would if you were at your actual job.

Stay home. Save lives.

This is a time where we need to look after and out for each other. Society needs to band together in effort to stop this pandemic.

If anyone needs help or guidance on adjusting to working from home and being more productive, please reach out to me and I will offer my advice and guidance.
